At the start of this month I went to Milan with some friends for a long weekend and it was such a fantastic trip. I love Italy, the food, the architecture, the culture, the scenery and of course Milan had all this and more. It was my first time visiting this beautiful city and I would certainly recommend it as there was so much to see and do, as well as copious amounts of scrumptious wine and divine food, making for the perfect break. Here I have narrowed it down to the three must do things if you ever visit this fabulous city.
This was my favourite part of the entire trip, in just one hour on a double decker train you arrive in stunning Lake Como. We went on a boat ride out and all around the lake and it was so gorgeous, the scenery is breath-taking and the houses dotted all around the lake are incredible. Some are positioned so high up on the mountains that they have their own private lifts up to them. After the boat trip we wandered around the beautiful town and did a little wine tasting – an obligatory task while in Italy.
2. Duomo di Milano
This Gothic cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete and I can see why, the architecture is simply exquisite and the detail is second to none. It is stunningly beautiful and is much more impressive on the outside than on the inside but the interior is still a must-see with a nice little souvenir shop right inside, perfect for picking up some cute trinkets. If you are planning on visiting the cathedral it is important to note that there are lots of rules, such as no skirts, no low tops, this is out of respect as after all it is a cathedral with regular masses taking place not just a beautiful tourist attraction. A full list of the regulations can be found on the website. There is also a great gelato store right opposite the cathedral that has pretty much every flavour you could want, so it is perfect to enjoy while taking in the beautiful surroundings, beware of the pigeons though as they seem to love the gelato too.
Just down from the Duomo di Milano is a beautiful street filled with brilliant stores, including the fanciest Zara I have ever seen and one of my favourite wedding dress designers also has a huge studio here, unfortunately it wasn’t open when we were there so we were restricted to window shopping, I will have to go book in another Milan shopping trip soon for a better look. To the right of the Cathedral is the luxury shopping mall, filled with all the high end designer shops including Prada and Louis Vuitton. Believe it or not the stores are prettier on the outside than the inside with the incredible architecture making them a must see.
Top Tip: have your camera ready for when you are flying into Milan, as you fly over the Alps which is so incredible and makes you feel super small and is also a nice reminder of how amazingly beautiful and vast this world is.
